DailyUI 031 – File Upload
From the very get go I had an idea of where to take this one, and it’s a very standard pattern you see in a lot of places. An illustration of scattered documents in the background depicting different things. I chose the main one being a regular “text” document with a cloud upload icon to further denote that this is an upload type situation. One big miss I made here is that the arrow seems to be a bit separated at the tip and body. Didn’t notice until way later.
The other two are music and video documents. I figured text, music and video are the three most commonly uploaded items to services like these, so why not have them represented? Then I added the circle background and long shadow in the background. I feel like overall the contrast on these are way off. The circle is much darker than the background and takes away focus, and the main document is too similar in colour to the circle and makes it blend in too much. Shame.
As for the upload part, I wanted to depict three scenarios; a failed transfer, a pending transfer and a completed transfer. Along with this, three different file types; movie, photo and music. First off, I should have made the iconography here more consistent. Solid backgrounds with the icon in the middle, instead of just a floating icon. It looks jarringly inconsistent.
Then at the bottom we have a FAB to add new files for the upload. Overall this became very Google-esque in its design. I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing though. Sometimes it’s nice to fall into a proven pattern. The colours were also chosen in a very standard RGB manner, except a bit more pastel-y because I find this more pleasing to the eyes.
A couple of missteps, but overall I’m fairly happy.
