DailyUI 020 – Location Tracker

20 days down, 80 to go. Time sure flies fast.

Preface: up until this point I’ve been working solely in Photoshop to create these. Starting with the next one I’ll be moving over to Illustrator for at least 20 challenges.

So here we have a location tracker. As always, I started out by researching a bit looking at how other people interpreted the challenge. And mostly, it’s very standard “find my location” or “nearby things” type of map application designs. I felt like doing that would be too boring, so I wanted to take it one step further. Out into the ether.

Representing my mood for the day, I wanted to create something more ethereal. Still relating to the trying to locate yourself on a map type of functionality, I took the map out into our very own Milky Way. In this way, making it both trying to find where you are but also a more symbolical trying to find your place in the universe.

Here there is only one big call to action, which is the “Find my place” button. Pressing it would create the pulsating circles you see to the right, where it shows where it thinks you are. Ultimately, it errors and tells you that it is unable to locate you.

Other buttons include a hamburger menu icon. In hindsight, I feel like I could have added another menu to the left instead of the hamburger icon, with several layers. Maybe something along the lines of street, country, earth and then space to make it seem like a fun feature of a larger map application. Then there’s the standard search icon. Just in case you want to see what Jupiter is up to.

Font used is DIN Condensed Bold. I quite like this one, so I’ve been using it more and more lately. It fit well here I think.

That’s all I have to say about this one. Never stop looking to the stars. Live long and prosper, friends.
