DailyUI 014 – Countdown Timer

I don’t often use timers, but as part of our redesign module at school we were looking a lot at clock applications, alarms and the like. So I’ve been more involved with them lately than ever. See how that went on my portfolio page.

The times I do use a timer though, is usually when I need to have something done in a specific period of time. And that’s most often cooking rice, thus the 20 minutes you see here in my design. Since I’m not very good at math, I made the countdown hit exactly 15 minutes left, to make it simple for me on how to make the outer, red ring.

And since a timer is something that only is supposed to do one thing really, I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. The timer itself, and a pause button that turns into a go button when it’s off. Nothing more than that is really needed in my opinion. The pause button was made into a big FAB to go with the circular theme and to make it stand out more. Above the elapsed time I put in the original time, to remind you of what it was. I also tried having a label, or a name for the timer, but I felt that it detracted from the simplicity and cleanliness of the design.

The colour palette here is something I grabbed from the game Downwell. Earlier today I unlocked it and immediately I thought to myself that I wanted to use it, so here we are. It’s very punchy and contrasty, which I like.

The font used here is Avenir Next. Again, mainly to use something new. I think this is a font I can use more often.
